2020 "Adjunct Faculty Excellence" Award Recipients

Elodie Petelo, French and Italian: Elodie has assumed an incredible range of duties in her department. She has distinguished herself as a model of pedagogical excellence, an active contributor of new teaching materials (she shares generously with colleagues), and a thoughtful critic of materials that fail to help our students meet their outcomes. In addition, she has assumed responsibility at times for selecting, training and supervising the native and near-native students who work in our writing, speaking and language labs for these courses. She has found wise solutions to mundane and difficult problems. She is thus an excellent supervisor in addition to her teaching skills.

She has stepped in to assist full-time colleagues who have had responsibilities over our Teaching majors. In this, she has conducted many insightful and formative observations of our student instructors working in local schools.

Several years ago she decided to become a proficiency rater for the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). Her training has helped to shape the curriculum, and our students benefit immensely from the expertise she shares. She is not simply a certified rater, but a respected one.

She is punctual, professional, respectful but rigorous and demanding, and she is always focused and on task. Her organizational skills show as well in her advance preparation for the French Language Fair, which hosts 800-1,000 language students across the state and their teachers. She masters and is well ahead of all the logistical difficulties of this complex undertaking.

Lawrence Green, Music: In his 38th year since coming to BYU in 1982, Lawrence Green has been an outstanding and devoted colleague – a vital, but often overlooked faculty member. He quietly goes about his business, whether teaching his one-on-one private lessons to his guitar majors or managing gigantic evening group guitar glasses, when most other faculty have gone home. In addition to his impressive teaching legacy, he has been a successful performer both off-campus and here at BYU. His quiet unassuming demeanor is remarkable in its low-maintenance character. Larry is just always there, always doing his work in exemplary fashion, and always exhibiting high personal traits to the degree that he deserves this recognition for this lifetime of service.

Marci Edgington, Dance: Marci is a former U.S. Amateur Latin Champion. She holds a Masters Degree in dance, is a dual licentiate with the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance, and is recognized by the NDCA as a "Championship" judge and scrutineer. At the university she directs the Social Dance Program where over 2000 students participate annually in some 30 classes. Marci teaches courses in ballroom pedagogy, technique and theory. She is an accomplished choreographer for ballroom dance teams and was recently recognized as a "Top Trainer" by the USISTD.
