2019 "Adjunct Faculty Excellence" Award Recipients
Erika D. Price, English: Erika Price has taught at BYU for fourteen years, the last seven in the English Department where she has distinguished herself as an all-star teacher among the University’s largest adjunct faculty group. Erika’s magic formula: She loves what she does, and she loves her students. A demanding teacher, she requires her students to not only write much and well, she also requires them to think deeply. Her classes are creative and character building. Erika helps her students become engaged with their writing in creative and personal ways. For example, she takes her students to the Museum of Art each semester and has them engage with the art in their writing assignments. She also requires her students to work on a semester-long project to create good in the world through the written word. The results have been inspiring and, for many, life-changing. One of her students stated: “Sister Price has given me two things: skills to help me change the world and an example of someone who already has.” The English Department has benefitted from Erika’s lifelong service, passion for teaching, and dedication to BYU. She has served as the adjunct liaison for the department, as well as championing our adjuncts, serving on panels, mentoring graduate student instructors, judging the Writing 150 contest, and presenting teaching ideas at inservice meetings.
Marcella Shaver-Adams, Biology: Marci Shaver-Adams combines her love of biology with real-life applications in order to empower her students to connect more meaningfully with the world around them. Working closely with her colleagues, she led efforts to provide students in large sections of BIO 100 with authentic scientific inquiry experiences and other pedagogical best practices. Marci leverages her experiences as firefighter, EMT, and member of the Utah County Search and Rescue team to provide engaging contexts for learning human biology. Her dedication to students, teaching excellence, and departmental and university goals provide an exemplar of the experiences we want for every biology student
